Guest Post: Tips for Newly Diagnosed Individuals with Diabetes

Guess what, folks! We have another guest post from our wonderful friends at The Diabetes App for you lovely people today. These are great tips for our newly diagnosed loved ones. You are not alone, remember that.

Navigating the world of diabetes management can be overwhelming — especially for those who have been recently diagnosed. Having diabetes means adjusting to a new diet, checking your blood sugar levels, and sifting through occasionally confusing information and resources. Considering all of these new changes being implemented into one’s life, it can cause depression, anxiety, and stress for those with diabetes. Finding ways to manage these symptoms while also managing a recent diagnosis is key towards living a healthier and happier life with diabetes.

  1. Accept your emotions and let yourself feel them all.
    When first being diagnosed with diabetes, many feel angry, scared, and lost. This can include feelings and thoughts such as, “Why me?” It is important to let yourself feel these emotions. Diabetes is stressful, and it is likely to alter your lifestyle. But, remember that that does not mean your life has to change drastically. With proper resources and information from your doctor, you can manage your diabetes. Learn healthy ways to cope with your emotions, and try to let yourself feel whatever they may be. Repressing them can potentially cause issues further down the road, including denial and depression.
  2. Confide in loved ones or professionals.
    During this time, emotions will be high. Some individuals have the instinct to repress how they are feeling or isolate themselves. By talking to family and friends, it can help you work through your feelings. Express yourself, and be honest and open. Let them know that you would appreciate their support, as well as how you would like them to be there for you during this time. This may include help with going to doctors appointments, setting alarms for checking your blood sugar levels, or even just being there to listen. For some, looking into the possibility of professional help may be beneficial as well. Confide in your doctor or therapist to help figure out what is going to work best for you.
  3. Find a community.
    Many individuals with diabetes feel alone or misunderstood when they are first diagnosed, as sometimes they are the only one in their circle of friends who has the condition. Being able to relate to others is extremely important because it can help those diagnosed with managing their diabetes and looking to them for tips and advice. The Diabetes App is a free application that can be downloaded in any mobile device app store. This application is solely for the diabetes community. It has users who are type 1, type 2, and supporters. It acts as a social media platform where users can create a profile, join groups, post, message, and add each other. It also has access to resources including meal plans curated by dietitians, access to professionals, live streams, exercise videos, and more. By joining The Diabetes App, those who are recently diagnosed can receive access to invaluable resources and friends who will all be able to relate to what they may be experiencing and offer insightful advice.

To conclude, being newly diagnosed with diabetes can be a troubling time. It can cause distress and concern about changes that will occur in the individual’s life. This is why it is important to figure out what will work best for you in terms of managing your diagnosis. Some helpful tips include confiding in loved ones such as family friends, and leaning on them for emotional support. Be open about how you are feeling, both to yourselves and your doctors or family. Reach out to others when you need help, and let them know how they can assist you. Find a community that understands you and can relate to you. Season Two: Episode Six

MARCH 28, 2021

This week I had an eye appointment for my new glasses. My eyes have gotten a little worse in the last three years. In the past year, I’ve been getting headaches from wearing my glasses so I knew I needed a new prescription. I’m glad I’m getting new ones.

My ophthalmologist said that the pressure in my eye is borderline high. I’m not sure how I can lower the pressure in my eye, but he said that’s the only problem he sees with my eyes right now, so I’m really glad that even though my diabetes still isn’t under control, it isn’t completely messing up my body yet.

On Friday, I had my appointment with my endocrinologist. Not very helpful. He wants to try and put me back on Ozempic. I told him that we were doing better financially but I don’t think we’re that great yet. I mean $800 per pen for only a month’s worth. Not sure how I feel about it but I said I would try. I’m not sure if he’s also giving me the fast-acting insulin too or if I’m even still going to be taking my Lantus with the Ozempic. I have to give his office a call this week to clarify my drug usage.

I’ve been feeling unwell the last couple of days. I haven’t been in to work much but I’m still working from home. I woke up with a sore throat a couple days ago and it went away, then the next morning it was worse and didn’t fully go away. Then this morning at 4:30 I woke up and couldn’t breathe or swallow and I was coughing. And I’m not going to lie to you, I thought I had COVID. I started crying and I couldn’t go back to sleep for a long while. But after sitting up for a while and drinking water, my cough got better and I was able to swallow a bit more.

My husband bought me cold and cough medicine when he came home from work and I took some and felt a lot better. I’m still coughing here and there but I can breathe. I’m still worried it’s COVID. We don’t have free COVID testing until Wednesday and that’s a bit too long to be out of work I think. But we’ll see what happens when I wake up in the morning on Monday, because apparently it happens while I’m asleep.

I’ll give you folks an update next Monday here on the blog or earlier on my Facebook page. I don’t know what’s going on with me, but if tomorrow I feel worse, I’m going to go to Urgent Care to see what the heck is up with my body. Wish me luck folks.

Why I Think Seeing a Dietician is Beneficial for Diabetics

Last year, I wrote a blog post about having your Diabetes Care Team and why it’s so important for you to choose the right people. Choosing the right people that support you and are helpful and sensitive to your current condition is so important. I’m part of a diabetes support group for women on Facebook and it’s always so sad seeing some women being mistreated by their doctors and wondering if what they’re doing is even right because their doctors make them feel dumb and inadequate. Having the right people by your side should NOT make you feel less than the amazing person you are.

Your Diabetes Care Team should consist of a Primary Care Physician (PCP), Endocrinologist, Certified Diabetes Educator, Opthalmologist, Podiatrist, Dentist, and a Registered Dietician. All of them specializing in fields that can help monitor and manage your diabetes.

Since I was diagnosed with Type 2 in February 2017, I have really slowly built my team. Like really slowly. I had my PCP who diagnosed me and started me on oral medication in hopes that by losing weight and eating better would naturally bring me back around,which it didn’t.

In 2018, I went to a diabetes education class with a diabetes educator. I learned a lot at that class and I’m really glad I went, but I don’t know if the lady that headed the class is still working there anymore. Also in 2018, I got my opthalmologist and podiatrist. They’ve been keeping an eye on how my diabetes has been affecting my eyes and feet, which so far has been good.

In 2019, I was referred to an endocrinologist who put me on insulin which I’ve been using ever since. My dose has gone way up to the point that he may have to prescribe me another insulin on top of that.

And finally in 2021, I got a dietician. My PCP was supposed to work it out for me but that never happened so I had to do it on my own. Thankfully I’ve been taking classes and other services from a local nonprofit that provides classes about diabetes, hypertension, and healthy eating among other subjects. They also work with dieticians and other specialists to bring their services to the Native Hawaiian population. I’m very grateful for their services.

Nonprofit organization that serves the Native Hawaiian health care system on Hawaii Island. They provide medical, behavioral health, and community education services.

Here’s why seeing a dietician is so important. Going to classes about healthy eating and diabetes will always go over what you should and shouldn’t eat. You can ask the instructor questions but you can’t have a conversation with them during class because there are others there as well. I suggest seeing a dietician so you can sit with them, one on one, and really get to the nitty gritty.

I saw my dietician for the first time yesterday and we talked about when I usually eat, what I ate in the last 24 hours, what my glucose reading was, what my concerns were, if there were any changes recently in appetite or anything really, and she gave me suggestions on what I could change. Talking to someone one on one is really getting the information to sink in better than during all of the classes I took.

I have to go back in and see her in a month to see if any of the changes I’ve implemented are working. The changes I’ve agreed to make are to eat brown rice instead of white rice, try whole grain bread instead of white bread, get more fiber in my diet is the big goal, try to incorporate more vegetables in to my diet, and continue to walk AT LEAST 15 mins for AT LEAST 3 days (the more the better).

I’m going to have to increase how many times a day I check my blood sugar which might now be about six times a day at least. I think my endocrinologist might also want me to check before and after I eat now too. But I’m willing to do this now more than ever! Why? Because I’m so close to breaking 200lbs! I haven’t been less than 200lbs since 2012. There was a short stint in 2019, but I gained it all back because of stress. I want to break 200lbs once and FOR ALL!

If you haven’t seen a dietician, I really suggest you do. They can come up with a menu of things you should eat more of as well as what kind of physical activity you can do to bring your blood sugar down. The one on one experience will also benefit you as well, I think.

Season Two: Episode Five

MARCH 15, 2021

I have my Endocrinologist appointment set for next week Friday. I just went and got my lab work done this past Saturday. I forgot how much I hate needles. It hurt like a bugger. I had to make an appointment with our lab to do my blood stuff and the whole night before my arm was so sore and I was freaking out about the needle. The morning of I was scared and my arm was sore.

I’m so glad that even though I freak out about needles, as long as I don’t look at it, I don’t flinch. Do you know how much more sore it would be if I flinched? My goodness that would be painful.

I have to wait a couple of days for my results to be available through my portal and I can see what my A1C is. I’m not looking forward to that at all. I’m sure it’s high, like over 9. I’m so upset at myself. Yes I’ve lost weight but I haven’t been watching what I’m eating and my sugar has been elevated. I was in a rush this morning and I forgot to take my blood sugar before I left the house.

I swear my diabetes management has gotten worse this past year. I need to exercise and eat better so I can get my blood sugar down and maybe I won’t need to take the second insulin, which thanks to the Stimulus check I will be able to afford for a short time. But I can’t keep paying for two insulins and I need to work on myself too.

I’m really scared of needles and I don’t want to take two insulins and inject like three times a day. I don’t like this at all. I’ll let you folks know how my appointment goes in a couple weeks. But I’m sure he’s going to prescribe the second insulin.

App Review: DMP App

Last week, I was honored to have a guest post from DMP – The Diabetes App. I decided that I would download it and see how it looked. Right off the bat, I think it’s a GREAT app! It’s visually appealing, full of useful information, and we can connect with other diabetics. Below is a detailed review of the app.


Visuals: 5/5

I love the colors they chose and the art that was used. It’s not harsh colors or lines, everything is kind of soft and smooth. It’s easy on the eyes.


Messaging System: 5/5

The messaging system is almost like text messaging. You can choose who your message goes to and just start typing. You have to make a connection with people in order to be able to message them.


Profile: 5/5

The profile is really great. You have your profile picture, username, # of posts, followers, and following right at the top. Your About section tells people what Type of Diabetes you have and when you were diagnosed. Then you can go into your Bio and you can fit a lot of information in your bio. At the bottom you can see your Recent Posts. There’s a ‘+’ button at the bottom where you can start writing a new post.


Feed: 5/5

You can access your Feed that has posts from others from groups you follow. Right now there aren’t a lot of groups. You can also go to a Type 1 or Type 2 specific daily chat from the main menu and see what other Type 2 diabetics are posting about today and you can post your encouragement, like posts, and report posts. It’s kind of like Facebook for diabetics.


Resources: 5/5

You will have a lot of access to resources like blog articles, meal plans and recipes, exercise videos, podcasts, and more. I love the exercise videos because they’re easy to follow along. I can’t wait for more videos to be added.


Overall: 5/5

You have access to so much through the app and I personally like to connect with others with Type 2 diabetes. There’s so much relatable content on the app and you can also connect with professionals like pharmacists and mental therapists. It’s a really great app and I highly recommend the app for fellow diabetics.

Guest Post: Monday Moves with DMP

Hello beautiful, wonderful people! Today I have a treat for you. We have a guest post from DMP – The Diabetes App, about their Monday Moves program. The app has exercise videos, recipes, a livestream archive of an array of topics, and a whole social media platform where we can connect with other diabetics. The benefits to working out are endless! From uplifting your mood, improving your cardiovascular health, to overall just feeling good about your body. However, despite all these known benefits, many people still find it difficult to get started. They ask themselves, what should I be doing? Am I doing this wrong? One of the main reasons that people quit their fitness regime is that they get bored of the same exercise routines week after week. With Monday Moves, DMP offers a fresh start to the beginning of every week. It reignites one’s passion for fitness and why they might have started this journey to begin with. Not only can people embark on this fitness journey with DMP, but by joining DMP they are connected to thousands of diabetics on the app. Another reason why people don’t stick to their workout? There is no one cheering them on. With an online support community, people can find the reassurance they need on days they feel like giving up.

Working out affects you more than just physically, it changes the way one sees themself. It shows them how capable they are and how strong they are. Like any journey, the important thing is to start slow and get informed. In the same way someone wouldn’t go down a ski slope without getting lessons, it’s important to get informed before starting any fitness regime. It’s recommended that people talk to their doctor before starting any fitness regime, and remember that DMP will be there along the way. After a workout, DMP urges its users to check out their recipe section for delicious recipes to support a healthy lifestyle.

If you are looking for a sign, this is it! Remember that fitness is about progress, not perfection. So strive towards getting better each and every day and try not to compare yourself to others. Season Two: Episode Four

FEBRUARY 22, 2021

I have to schedule doctor appointments! So much fun. I need one with my PCP for this week or next week, one with my endocrinologist for whenever, and one for next year with my foot doctor. I haven’t seen my Endocrinologist in a couple months now and while money is still a bit tight, I really need to my A1C checked because I don’t think it’s doing great but I need to know where I’m at.

Apparently, my foot doctor no longer takes my MedQuest insurance so I have to change to another provider under MedQuest. Whenever I do that, if I can do that, then I can schedule my foot exam for next year. Hopefully, we are able to change our provider.

I just got off the phone with my Endocrinologist’s office and I have an appointment for next month set and I need lab work done so I’m glad the ball is moving on this because I can feel my diabetes is not getting better and I think it’s time to take that other insulin. It’s the only way I think.

I’ve managed to lose a little weight but it’s not enough and that’s so frustrating! I’m still eating less rice than before but I guess everything else still affects my blood sugar and that’s also VERY FRUSTRATING!!! I’ve been so busy with work that I haven’t been able to do a regular exercise regime or anything.

On an upside, last week a marketing copywriter for an app reached out to me and requested if they could do a guest post on the blog. That’s so exciting! So this Friday I will post my very first guest post! I am totally open to guest posts and I don’t mind if they promote themselves because I want to help everyone in the diabetes world. There’s not enough helpful information out there and I think more information should be available.

The guest post is about a diabetes app and I just downloaded it today. I plan to post a review about it next week so I have a whole week to check it out. It seems really cool so far and I can’t wait for you folks to get your hands on it too!

Other than that, I’m struggling to get my life and diabetes under control, but I’m still living life to the fullest!

Season Two: Episode Three

FEBRUARY 1, 2021

I’m sorry I haven’t been updating lately. I have been so busy with work that I can’t seem to find any time to blog these days, but I’m going to try and at least post ONCE a month for you folks. So far the update is neither good nor bad.

I have lost some weight just by cutting down on rice. If I even have rice in a day, it’s usually not a lot, maybe one or two scoops (about a cup) at any given mealtime. Most days I just go without rice and I’ll have mashed potatoes instead or nothing at all. Plus I’m consciously choosing more vegetables and proteins in my diet. I’ve managed to finally go below 212 pounds. I’ve been at about 212 pounds for several months, since the pandemic started. I’ve finally managed to keep my weight below 210 for a month so that’s an upside.

The downside is I haven’t been doing my insulin. I’m not sure how my medical is working out in the new year and I haven’t been in to see my doctor yet so I’m just making what I have already stretch, plus I still hate the needles I have and 99% of the time, they make me bleed and they are way more painful than my old needles. I have to find time to call my insurance company and make sure I’m still covered. But I am still unable to pay for a second insulin so I’m not sure when I’m going to see my endocrinologist again. Not too worried about it though.

I’m trying to take care of my diabetes on my own with diet and exercise and with what I’m doing I’m actually losing weight so who knows, if I lose enough weight and keep it off, I might be able to manage my diabetes better. My PCP always said if I just lost enough weight, I would be better off. Although he never told me how, I’ve had to manage on my own.

I am making arrangements to meet with a dietician so I can make my own diabetes meal plan and find what foods are best for me and all that jazz, so I’m excited about that. Work keeps me busy enough that I can keep myself moving and burning calories so I think I’ll be okay for now. I just have to get better at eating.

Thank you for sticking with me for this long. I am still selling stickers on my Etsy page. I hope to design and release new stickers in the next month or two. But for now I’ve been so busy and I just wanted to let you folks know that I am okay.

Season Two: Episode Two

JANUARY 10, 2021

I had my eye doctor appointment this past week. Turns out my eyes are okay. Thank goodness. I was a little worried when I took an eye test that gauged my peripheral vision. I could hardly see most of the lines with my left eye, but my doctor said I was nearly perfect which was good considering it was my first time doing that test. Though I do remember when I was a kid, I did something like it at my pediatrician’s doctor office. Gosh that was a memory from a million years ago, I still remember how the doctor office looked it never changed, and it actually still hasn’t changed to this day. The same doctor is there still practicing.

My gynecologist is the same doctor that delivered my sisters and I. It’s pretty crazy living in a small town. Hardly anything changes here, but when you really look, everything has changed.

I am currently making changes to my life. I think it’s been pretty positive so far. I have consciously made the decision to eat less rice. Before I would eat rice every meal of the day, but now it’s only once or twice a day, mostly once though. As I write this on Sunday night, I had a fruit salad for dinner because I had a pretty heavy breakfast, medium lunch, and I just didn’t feel like eating a lot for dinner so we went and got fruits. I wanted apples, but I ended up eating the fruit salad instead tonight.

This morning, I was the lightest I’ve been since May 2020. I weighed in at 207.9lbs. I’ve been plateaued at 212 for a long time and I’m really glad that cutting out rice has really made me feel lighter and less bloated. Sometimes I’m weak and eat a bunch of rice, but now I feel awful afterwards and completely regret it, so I’m learning a little at a time. I’m getting there.

I still haven’t contacted my endocrinologist. I’m going to get a raise at my job, so maybe that’ll be able to help pay for the second insulin, but really, I don’t think I can afford it. Oh and my pharmacist gave me a different needle from the one I’ve had and I HATE IT. It says it’s the same length as my other needle but that is a bull lie, it looks so much longer! When I inserted the needle in my thigh, I felt the whole thing and it kind of felt like it popped something when the whole needle went in, I don’t know how else to describe it. When I was injecting the insulin, I could feel every single click of the plunger as each unit went in and I HATED THAT MOST. It’s not been a good experience.

I’m working and studying to get my securities license. I’m trying to really work on my business and it’s going to be a long road, but I have to keep reminding myself why I’m doing it. The studying is like learning a whole new language but I’m excited about it.

My blood sugar still hasn’t been in range all that much lately, but I’m getting there. I wish I wasn’t diabetic. I wish I could have a child and a house of our own. I wish I wasn’t fat and I had an actual butt. Wishing can only get you so far. You have to put in the work and make your wishes come true. You can shout your wishes to the Universe, but YOU have to meet the Universe halfway. I’m trying to meet the Universe halfway and it’s a lot of work, but I have so much to fight for. I have to fight for it, no matter what.

Today The Young and Diabetic turns ONE!

I can’t believe 2020 has come and finally gone. Our first year together has been filled with ups and downs. We’ve been through a lot together, you, my valued reader, and I.

I remember in the final months of 2019, I was planning out my new up and coming blog about diabetes. I started putting together my website and began planning what kinds of posts I would publish. My mission was to educate people about diabetes so they can better manage their disease or so they can help others on their journey. My mission stays the same now going in to 2021.

I fell off the wagon last year and I plan to get right back on for the new year. My plans for this blog are too grow my followership and post regularly. I want to post more diabetic-friendly recipes and find more things about diabetes. I want to expand my Etsy shop and get better at marketing. But most of all, I want to continue sharing relevant and quality information about diabetes with all of you.
